Psychoanalysis
A Deeper Exploration of the Inner Life
Psychoanalysis is a form of psychotherapy devoted to understanding the deeper forces that shape our emotional lives. It offers a space for sustained reflection on the patterns, relationships, memories, and unconscious experiences that influence how we think, feel, and relate to others.
While many forms of therapy focus primarily on symptom relief, psychoanalysis is interested in the broader landscape of a person’s inner world. Through careful attention to thoughts, feelings, dreams, memories, and the unfolding therapeutic relationship, psychoanalysis seeks to illuminate patterns that may have remained outside of conscious awareness.
Over time, this deeper understanding can lead to meaningful and lasting psychological change.
How Psychoanalysis Works
Psychoanalysis involves meeting regularly for a prolonged period of time in a consistent and reflective setting where individuals are encouraged to speak freely about their thoughts, feelings, memories, and experiences.
Through this process, recurring emotional patterns often begin to emerge. These patterns may be connected to early relationships, life experiences, or unconscious conflicts that continue to influence present-day life.
The therapeutic relationship itself becomes an important part of this exploration. Feelings and reactions that arise within therapy can offer valuable insight into how individuals experience closeness, trust, vulnerability, and connection in their lives more broadly.
Who Psychoanalysis May Be Helpful For
People often seek psychoanalysis when they are interested in deeper self-understanding rather than only short-term symptom relief.
Some individuals come to psychoanalysis because they notice recurring patterns in relationships, work, or emotional life that feel difficult to understand or change. Others are drawn to the process because they are curious about their inner world and want to explore it more fully.
Psychoanalysis may be particularly helpful for individuals who:
• feel caught in repeating emotional or relational patterns
• are interested in exploring the deeper roots of anxiety, depression, or dissatisfaction
• have already participated in therapy and want to pursue deeper work
• are curious about dreams, unconscious processes, and the inner life
• value thoughtful reflection and long-term personal growth
My Approach
My work in psychoanalysis is informed by advanced training at the Houston Center for Psychoanalytic Studies and ongoing engagement with the psychoanalytic community.
Psychoanalysis offers a space where curiosity about one’s inner life can unfold gradually and thoughtfully. Rather than rushing toward solutions, the analytic process allows deeper emotional understanding to emerge over time.
Many individuals find that this process leads to greater self-awareness, more authentic relationships, and a stronger sense of freedom in how they live their lives.
Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychoanalysis exists along a continuum with psychodynamic psychotherapy. Both approaches share an interest in understanding unconscious emotional patterns and how past experiences shape present life.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy may involve meeting once or twice per week, while psychoanalysis typically involves meeting more frequently. The appropriate format depends on each individual’s goals, circumstances, and interest in engaging in deeper analytic work.
These options can be discussed together during an initial consultation.
